The most romantic things to do in Stockholm

Whether you’re in a relationship and travelling with your partner, or single and treating yourself to a city break, one thing is for certain: the romance of Stockholm will sweep you off your feet.

Gorgeously located between Lake Malaren and the majestic Baltic Sea, Stockholm is built on 14 picturesque islands, each with its own special character and waiting to be explored…

1. Potter around Gamla Stan, the beautiful Old Town

Gamla Stan - Stockholm's Old Town

Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, is a picturesque neighbourhood, perfect just to wander around whilst imagining the likes of Greta Garbo pottering around from a bygone era. Don’t miss the chance of getting a panoramic view of the city from one of its vantage points. You could climb up the spiral staircase of the bell tower by the City Hall to see Stockholm in her entirety, brimming with bridges, water and bold Baltic architecture.

2. Take a stroll, cycle, or have a picnic on Djurgården Island

Djurgården is the green island of Stockholm that every visitor to the city should explore – it’s surprising to get so much nature in a capital! The 10 km trail going around Djurgården combines a waterfront and canal promenade, farm and gardens, stunning residences and official buildings, as well as museums. Depending on how much energy you have you’ve got, you can walk, cycle or even try your hand at jumping on a tandem! Thought if you’re looking for a really leisurely activity, you could simply find a scenic spot that’s perfect for a picnic.

3. See the city by Kayak

Looking to do something a bit more adventurous?

Kayaking is an alternative date suggestion. It will guarantee a lot of fun and will encourage you to bond over team work and maybe even add a spicy dose of competition into the mix!

Stockholm is a city built on water, so kayaking through the city is a great way to have fun with your partner while sightseeing. It’s super easy to do because you can rent your own kayak and paddle from island to island. Not many capital cities are navigable by kayak, but Stockholm isn’t your typical capital city.

4. Feel the music at the ABBA Museum

A visit to the ABBA Museum

Romance doesn’t always need to be love hearts and roses petals, sometimes it’s about being silly and reminiscing about the time when you were singing Dancing Queen in the bathroom mirror before getting ready to go to a party decades ago. Okay, even if that didn’t happen, the ABBA Museum is a fabulous place to pretend you’re the 5th member of Sweden’s most famous band in history. You’ll love it, we promise.

5. Spend the evening on a Sunset Dinner Cruise

For the perfect finale to your romantic trip to Stockholm, how about joining a 2-hour Sunset Dinner Cruise with Stomma? Aboard a refurbished 1930’s steamboat, you can dine on delicious Swedish specialties as you dreamily watch the scenery of the magnificent archipelago passing by. After dinner, you can sneak out on deck and steal a cheeky kiss from your loved one (we promise not to tell anyone!).
