An exploration of Sweden’s Arctic wilderness and cultural landscape which includes two of the world’s most unique hotels.

So many people have now heard about these two very special hotels; travel writers, bloggers, vloggers and experiential travellers from all over the world have shared their stories in numerous online magazines and blogs. Are these two hotels really all that special? YES THEY ARE!

Our holiday combines both of them in one trip. First you experience a 2-night stay in a tree-room at Treehotel designed by world famous architects, close to and embracing nature, however, with a modern, almost luxurious twist. Then you cross the Arctic Circle by train spend the next couple of nights chilling out in Sweden’s coolest hotel, the original ICEHOTEL. With a full free day in each destination you have the opportunity to explore your location by a variety of means…dog-sled, snowmobile, reindeer sled, snowshoe, cross-country skis – the choice is yours.

Day 1 | Arrive Swedish Lapland and Treehotel

Arrive Luleå Airport by air from the UK. Met on arrival for your guided transfer to Harads (duration 90 minutes). Your transfer will take you via the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gammelstad Church Village and the small town of Boden. During your journey your guide will privde you with an insight into local history, culture and nature. On arrival in Harads you will check-in to your Tree Room for your 2-night stay.

Time to relax before dinner in served in Britta's Bed & Breakfast, which is also reception for Treehotel and where breakfast and dinner are served.

Day 2 | Free day for optional activities


Following breakfast (served in Treehotel Guesthouse) you have a free day. We recommend you pre-book one of our exciting optional activities to maximise your opportunities for exploring and experiencing this wonderful Arctic region. Day 3 | Rail journey across the Arctic Circle to ICEHOTEL


Following breakfast you will transfer from Harads to the small town of Boden where you join the Polar Express train on its journey northwards, across the Arctic Circle, to Kiruna. The train is very comfortable and you will find yourself sharing your carriage with a mixture of local skiers and those travelling to the Arctic for a variety of winter wonderland experiences.

Met on arrival at Kiruna Station and transferred to the small village of Jukkasjärvi and ICEHOTEL resort.

Check-in to your Ice Room room before enjoying dinner in ICEHOTEL Restaurant. You have the remainder of the evening free before retiring for the night; the adjacent service room has a lounge area with showers, saunas, plus lockers for luggage and other personal belongings.

Day 4 | Free day for optional activity

Awake to a warm drink of lingonberry juice, followed by a hot sauna, shower and hearty breakfast. You will check-out of your cold accommodation mid-morning before checking-in to your warm accommodation for the night.

An amazing collection of tree house rooms, all with WC and washbasin – showers in the Tree Sauna close by! Each one is an individual design based on ecological principles and designed by internationally renowned architects. Price based on either the Birds Nest, Cabin, Blue Cone or UFO, supplement for the Mirrorcube and their latest design – the 7th Room designed by famed architectural firm Snøhetta. Britta’s Pensjonat is close by which has a restaurant, sauna and relaxation area and is also where breakfast is served. Staying in one of these rooms really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

ORIGINAL ICEHOTEL

The ICEHOTEL at Jukkasjärvi was the first hotel of its kind and and is built of ice and snow with designs inspired by the local nature.  There is, of course, an Ice Bar and lounge where you can mingle with other guests sipping colourful cocktails from glasses made of ice.  There is, however, a  warmer option available, sitting in the warm building connected to the ICEHOTEL around a crackling fire until it is time for bed.   A hot drink, breakfast and sauna are included the following morning.

ROOM TYPES

ART SUITE | 15 ROOMS: Beautifully carved by hand from the pristine Torne River ice, our Art Suites are all individually designed and created by hand-picked artists from around the world and a wide range of disciplines. These ephemeral rooms last for a few months during winter before returning to Torne River come spring. We have 12 double rooms, 2 three-bed rooms, and 1 four-bed room in this category.

ICE ROOM | 20 ROOMS: The Ice Rooms are comfortable with pure and clean ice décor that embellish the rooms. With a room temperature of –5 degrees Celsius, we offer you the basic ICEHOTEL-experience and a good night’s sleep. We have 11 double rooms, 2 three-bed rooms and 1 four-bed room in this category.

  • Art Suite: Our room with exquisite hand carved ice art — each suite individually designed. The bedframe is made of ice. You sleep on a thick mattress that is covered with reindeer hides. A thermal sleeping bag keeps you warm throughout the night.
  • Ice Room: Our standard room with ice décor and a bed made of ice. The bed you sleep on has a thick mattress that  rests on a wooden base. The bed is covered with reindeer hides and you sleep in a thermal sleeping bag.

ICEHOTEL 365

Available all year round and run on solar power, ICEHOTEL 365 with heated en-suite bathrooms, real doors and ceiling heights of four meters that give each room magnificent dimensions adds a new level of luxury to the ICEHOTEL-experience. Each suite is individually themed and hand carved by select artists from around to world and a wide range of disciplines. The bedrooms are furnished with exclusive Carpe Diem Beds, which provide the best comfort. All beds are covered with reindeer hides and on top of this you sleep in a thermal sleeping bag. The rooms hold a temperature of –5 to –8 degrees Celsius.

DELUXE SUITES 365 | 9 ROOMS: The Deluxe Suites are our largest suites and feature a heated relaxation area with designed en-suite bathroom. Champagne in the room, complimentary organic Arctic spa products and luggage service are included in the price. You can check-in and get private access to your room from 15:00. We offer 9 double rooms in this category; 1 Johka, 4 Hilla and 4 Jáuvre.

  • Deluxe Suite 365, Johka – The spacious relaxation in Johka holds a bathroom, two comfortable armchairs and double waterfall showers directly connected to the bedroom. The design is a combination of local culture and history in the building material and details. Johka is wheelchair accessible.
  • Deluxe Suite 365, Hilla- The relaxation Hilla holds a bathroom, two comfortable armchairs, shower and sauna directly connected to the bedroom. The design is a combination of local culture and history in the building material and details.
  • Deluxe Suite 365, Jáuvre – The relaxation Jáuvre holds a bathroom, two comfortable armchairs, shower, sauna and bathtub directly connected to the bedroom. The design is a combination of local culture and history in the building material and details.

ART SUITES 365 | 11 ROOMS: The Art Suites come with a complimentary private changing booth and luggage storage in Riverside Lobby, adjacent to ICEHOTEL. Saunas, showers and additional toilets are also located here. Heated toilets and a charging station for your phone or tablet can be found inside ICEHOTEL 365, in close proximity to your room. Kaamos Hotel Room at the ICEHOTEL

Warm accommodation at the ICEHOTEL is provided in their Kaamos Hotel Rooms. There are two types of room: standard and superior, however the difference is primarily one of higher standard of decoration and artwork.

All Kaamos rooms are ground floor level and have 2 beds, desk and a seating area and a small coffee table. With a base of whitewashed wooden panel walls and calm shades of white, brown and dark grey. The hallway and en-suite tiled bathroom have heated stone floors. Each room has two floor-to-ceiling corner windows that let in plenty of light and overlook spruce and birch growing wild.

 

WILDLIFE & NATURE

Snowshoe Walk from Treehotel

Description:  Experience the thrill of walking on soft, metre-deep snow in the beautiful winter landscape, with the help of snow shoes. See the animal tracks in the snow, listen to the silence and move through the forestland with ease. Your guide will teach you the technique and share their knowledge of the forest and the environment. If you are lucky, you might get to see elk, reindeer or forest birds during the walk.

The 3-hour trip includes a hot drink and home-baked pastry (fika), whilst the 5-hour trip includes a delicious outdoor lunch made from local produce cooked over an open fire.
Operates:  December – March (depending on snow conditions).
Departs:  Morning departure after breakfast.
Duration:  3 hours (with fika), 5 hours (with lunch).
Price:  £190 per adult (3-hour trip), £250 per adult (5-hour trip).

Good to know:  This trip is for a minimum of two participants and a maximum of eight. Participants should wear warm, comfortable clothing.

The Stately Storforsen from Treehotel

Description:  Storforsen is one of the highest unrestricted white-water rapids in Europe and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Due to the force from the rapids, they never freeze, no matter how cold the winter months. Let yourself be carried away by the thundering river and also enjoy the quieter brooks running out between the rocks. There are footbridges in the area allowing everyone to make their way out to the rapids. There is also a forestry and log driving museum here. During your visit, your guide will cook you lunch over an open fire and provide information about your surroundings and the areas history and culture.

Wildlife and Nature Photography at ICEHOTEL

Description:  Begin the tour at the ICEHOTEL, where a photo guide picks you up and takes you out into nature in a minivan. Be ready to spot arctic wildlife like moose, reindeer and birds. Your guide will help you capture them and the wonderful surroundings on camera. At the end of the tour enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. SD memory card, minimum 8 GB is not included.

Description:  A northern lights experience is amazing and becomes even more breathtaking seen from the horseback out in the wilderness. Enjoy the bus transfer to the Ofelas Icelandic horse farm, where you will meet the animals and prepare your own horse. The tranquil ride through the winter evening is magical, like being inside a fairy tale. Back at the farm, dinner is made with local produce and served in a Sámi hut.

SÁMI CULTURE

Visit the Forest Sámi and the Arctic Circle from Treehotel

Description:  A visit to the Forest Sámi Eriksson family in Flakaberg is a journey which indulges all of the senses. Lars, who is a great storyteller, will tell you about Sámi culture, his childhood and youth and his life as a reindeer herder in the forestland of Swedish Lapland. You will get to meet the reindeer that wander the farm, try pot-boiled coffee by the campfire and be treated to a tasty lunch inside his wooden cabin. The tour also includes a visit to the Arctic Circle.

Ráidu – Meet the Reindeer from ICEHOTEL

Description: For thousands of years, the Sámi people have lived in harmony with nature and their reindeer, constantly moving in search of food for the herd. Here you get to meet the reindeers and let them pull you by sled on a 200 meter track. After a short transfer from Icehotel, you encounter the Sámi culture at Nutti Sámi Siida, founded by the Sámi Nils Nutti. Here you get to meet and feed the curious reindeer and learn more about the Sámi lifestyle and the indigenous people of the region before driving a reindeer sled around a fenced 200-meter track in a wooden sled, pulled by a reindeer. You then gather around the fire in a traditional Sámi tent where you are served coffee and get to taste the Sámi signature dish ‘suovas’. The tour ends with a short transfer back to Icehotel.

Description:  If you want to be sure of taking good photos of the amazing Northern Lights then this is the tour for you. Our photo-guides lend you good cameras and tripods for Northern Lights photography or, if you prefer to use your own camera, you will receive guidance on how best to use it. Tis tour is great for beginners, you go to beautiful photo locations where there are good chances to photograph and experience the Aurora Borealis. While you wait for the Northern Lights you learn the primary skills for night-time photography so you can capture the Northern Lights, the nature and yourselves in the camera’s lens. The tour ends with a cup of coffee or tea by the fire.

Description:  Experience the beautiful winter wonderland from the dog sled. This is a perfect activity for families travelling with kids or those who want a calm and cosy tour. Description: On this hands-on dog sled tour you will learn to run your own team of huskies and get an interesting insight into the musher’s adventurous life in the last wilderness of Europe. After an introduction to equipment and safety the journey through the wintry landscape begins. Heading out across the snowy plains gives a huge feeling of freedom. Halfway through the tour a traditional lunch is served at a cosy wilderness camp. Drive your own team or sit on the guide’s sled as a passenger through the beautiful snowy plains.

The Ultimate Dog Sledding Adventure (Overnight) from ICEHOTEL

Description:  Join an exciting adventure with your own team of sled dogs in search of the Aurora Borealis. You are picked up from ICEHOTEL with a snowmobile sled and taken across the frozen Torne River to the husky kennel where you meet your own team of dogs. The dog sled guide walks you through the equipment and safety before you head out on a fantastic winter adventure, driving your own dog sled following the guide to one of our secluded wilderness camps with the option to try a traditional sauna. You are served a 2-course dinner during the evening and hopefully, the Northern Lights will make an appearance! After breakfast, you help to harness the dogs and drive your own sled back to ICEHOTEL.

Description: Experience Lapland’s magnificent winter nature in broad daylight. This excursion takes you across frozen lakes, through hilly landscapes and the Torne River. Along the route, you will stop for a traditional Swedish ‘fika’ (coffee served with something sweet) by the fire.

Description: Join a snowmobile trip that’s fun for the whole family. You set off with snowmobiles and sleds from Icehotel into the wilderness and stop at a wilderness camp to enjoy a Swedish fika and games in the snow! Your guide will start a campfire to prepare coffee and warm lingonberry juice. On really cold days you can warm up inside the wilderness camp. Parents and older children ride snowmobiles and smaller children ride comfortably in a sled.

Snowmobile Overnight Tour – a Night in Rapid Lodge from ICEHOTEL

Description:  If you are looking for an exciting experience in the wilderness, an overnight stay in a wilderness camp is perfect. You start with a snowmobile tour across Torne River, through the winter wonderland and eventually reach the wilderness lodge Luspen, situated on the riverbank. There is no Wi-Fi or electricity here, perfect to unplug and relax. While the guide makes a 2-course dinner you can enjoy the wood-fired sauna.

Departures:  Departs Friday and Saturday, 1600 – 1000 (following day)

Treehotel Flavour Tour from Treehotel

Description:  Meet Eva Gunnare, culture guide, food connoisseur and specialist in local wild herbs and berries. Eva has a passionate way of sharing her life through stories, flavours and songs. During this easy tour she will walk with you through the pine and birch forest to the meadows surrounding the Treehotel, discovering the flavours from the nature in many delicious ways. Even if most plants during the winter months lie under the snow, Eva will still introduce you to them and their traditions of usage. A special “fika” is served with Eva’s treats she has made from her foraged treasures.

Eva has lived with the reindeer herders for many years and experienced the traditions from having a life close to the nature. In this tasty tour she wants to give you an understanding about the wonderful Arctic everyday life.

Ice Dining from Treehotel

Description:  Something you may only experience once in a lifetime! A beautiful and exciting activity in the moonlight with the chance to see the Northern Lights. The evening is lit by torches and candles while you are served a 3-course dinner in a heated tipi tent on an ice covered lake. Inside you will sit on reindeer skins and enjoy a delicious meal made from locally produced ingredients. Transportation to and from the ‘restaurant’ is by sled which is pulled by a snowmobile. A very special and unique experience.

Chef’s Table on the Veranda from ICEHOTEL

Description:  A wonderful, 12-course dinner served around a huge wooden table in the company of fellow guests. Two acclaimed chefs from Head Chef, Alexander Meier’s culinary crew, cook and serve your menu with accompanying beverages selected by sommelier Sofie Nordefors – all cooked and served in front of you, culinary theatre! Your chefs will talk about the produce, its preparation, cooking method and, of course, taste. This is a very intimate experience and, in keeping with visiting a Swedish home, guests are asked to remove their shoes when entering the ‘dwelling’. Perfect for a special occasion…or just because you’re worth it!
