This wonderful holiday begins in Sweden's beautiful capital city, Stockholm, before taking the overnight journey by rail northwards into Arctic Sweden and the Luleå Archipelago.
Stockholm is Sweden's wonderful capital city, and is known as 'Beauty On Water' as the city lays across several islands which are connected by bridges. The city is a combination of old and new, with Gammelstad being the old town and a maze of narrow cobbled streets which are home to independent shops, restaurants and cafes - in addition to the Royal Palace!
It would be easy to fly from Stockholm to Luleå, however we believe the overnight train is a much more adventurous and romantic way of making the long journey northwards to Luleå. The town enjoys a magnificent location on a peninsula where the Lule Bay meets the Gulf of Bothnia and overlooks a vast archipelago of islands and skerries. Your destination is the remote island of Brändöskär which lies overlooking the Luleå Archipelago and is a wonderful place to relax and slow the pace. Walking, kayaking and mountain biking are just some of the ways you can explore this glorious region and experience nature more closely.
This holiday is perfect for those who enjoy plenty of sightseeing, but at a slow and relaxing pace.
Day 1 - Arrive Stockholm
Arrive at Stockholm Arlanda Airport by air from the UK. The excellent Arlanda Express will take you directly from the airport to the Arlanda Express terminal in Stockholm city centre, and your hotel is a short walk from the station.
3 nights STOCKHOLM - Clarion Hotel Sign (including buffet breakfast)
Day 2 & 3 - Explore Stockholm
Two full days to explore glorious Stockholm! Stockholm is quite simply 'Beauty on Water' and could be an entire holiday in itself! We strongly recommend visit Skansen, the world's first open-air museum, Fotografiska, Stockholm's fabulous contemporary photography museum, Moderna Museet, the Modern Art Museum and, of course, the Vasa Museum, Scandinava's most visited museum. All of these have free entry with your included Stockholm Card. We also recommend The Abba Museum for a good old singalong!! See Excursions for more information
Day 4 - Stockholm to Luleå
Another full day in Stockholm.
Although you will check out of your hotel room, your luggage can be stored in the hotel's luggage lock and you will have access to a comfort room before your departure in addition to the First Class lounge at Stockholm Central Station. We recommend you enjoy dinner in one of Stockholm's numerous restaurants before your departure shortly after 2300 in the evening by overnight train northwards to Luleå. Your rail journey is a small adventure in itself - take the opportunity to say hello to fellow passengers and enjoy a simple meal from the train's buffet car (not included). Enjoy a good night's sleep in your private First Class compartment; your beds have a pillow, sheet and duvet and also contains a WC and shower, fully equipped with soap and towels plus a wardrobe, luggage rack and an electrical socket.
1 night ONBOARD TRAIN - 2 berth sleeper (breakfast included)
Day 5 - Arrive Luleå
Arrive in Luleå during late morning. You will be met on arrival by your guide/driver for your guided transfer to the small island of Brändöskär, located overlooking the vast Luleå Archipelago which is part of the Gulf of Bothnia. Your journey to Brändöskär is guided and travels via Gammelstad, which is Luleå's original church town and is a UNESCO World Hertigage Site.
On arrival at Brändön Lodge, check-in to your cabin accommodation and spend the remainder of the evening relaxing and enjoying the peace and tranquillity this small resort affords.
3 nights BRÄNDÖSKÄR - Brändön Lodge (includes buffet breakfast and 3-course evening meal)
Days 6 and 7 - Brändöskär, your Arctic retreat
The beautiful Luleå archipelago has a total of 1300 islands and only 100 residents and is a wonderful place to explore by kayak for those who like to be close to the water without actually being in it. If you prefer to stay on land, we recommend renting a fatbike and exploring the forest and beach, and finding yourself somewhere secluded to enjoy a picnic lunch or just set out on foot, and see where you end up...

After a leisurely breakfast you will be transferred to Luleå Airport for your return flight to the UK.
