This holiday begins at Stilleben (stee-lay-ben), a beautiful countryside boutique hotel and former village school, located in the village of Åmot. Your hosts, Sam and Jeroen, have worked hard to achieve a delightful product which combines quality accommodation, locally sourced organic, homemade food and a private outdoor Jacuzzi and traditional wooden sauna experience. Right on the doorstep you will find the entrance to a vast forest with trails perfect for exploring on foot, bike or horseback - follow in the footsteps of moose, deer, bear, wolf and lynx and immerse yourself in the natural world thriving beneath the protective canopy of spruce, birch, pine, rowan and aspen.
From Stilleben your holiday experience continues to your very own private island and authentic Swedish red-house or KABIN. Only accessible by boat, here time is spent exploring the island's nooks and crannies, paddling in the canoe or wild swimming in the refreshing and tranquil waters of the surrounding lake. Simply find yourself a comfortable spot to sit, eat, talk, read, watch...
Your final night is spent in Stockholm, Sweden's beautiful capital city, providing a very civilised and gentle return to sharing your space with others.

KABIN - private island and traditional Swedish cottage
KABIN is not just a place to stay, it is a place to escape. Collectively KABIN refers to a small island, only accessible by boat, where you will find a small, simple, traditional Swedish wooden cottage, surrounded by trees which fill the island, right down to the water’s edge. This island…this cottage…are exclusively yours for the duration of your stay.
The cottage has a basic kitchen which is fully equipped and stocked with ingredients for you to cook the menus which have been prepared for your stay (full instructions provided*). There is a living room with open fire, double bedroom and an eco-friendly bathroom with shower and WC and a range of natural, organic bathroom products. KABIN is ‘low-impact’ accommodation which means you use minimal water and electricity; however, this does not compromise your stay at all, on the contrary, the cottage has plenty of tea-lights to help create a more relaxing atmosphere whilst sitting in front of a roaring open fire.
Soak up the sun on the terrace, search for berries, go wild-swimming in the lake, fish, chop wood for the outdoor camp-fire but above all relax and let time stand still.
* Menus are for organic, vegetarian meals. You are provided with locally sourced ingredients to make simple, tasty, healthy meals for the duration of your stay.
SCANDIC CONTINENTAL (4 star) - Stockholm
A stay at the Scandic Continental puts you in the heart of Stockholm, close to city’s main shopping streets, entertainment and restaurants. All within walking distance, guests can stroll to the old town, Royal Palace, and many of the city's museums. Dine on freshly prepared dishes in the hotel's stylish restaurant - The Market - and sip a cocktail in the rooftop bar with stunning panoramic views of the city. If you truly want to relax after a day of activities then why not make your way to the sauna? The hotel has modern rooms and feature blackout curtains, Wi-Fi, a TV and city views, while bathrooms are equipped with FACE Stockholm products, hair dryer and a shower or bathtub. In the morning a wonderful buffet breakfast is available, including just about anything you could wish for.
STILLEBEN (3 star plus) - Åmot
First of all we believe it is important to let you know how Stilleben is pronounced and what it actually means. Pronounced Stee-lay-ben, the name is taken from the German word for a ‘still life’ art concept, where inanimate, mainly everyday objects are handpicked to feature within a painting or photograph in a more personal, meaningful way.
This concept sits perfectly at Stilleben, where simplicity and comfort come together to provide a very high quality, personal experience. Stilleben was once the village school, a very important building, and as such sits proudly on the hillside, overlooking the village of Åmot. Surrounded by hills and forests the hotel has just six bedrooms, all featuring parquet floors, comfy twin beds and contemporary bathrooms. You won’t find TVs in the rooms, but take it from us, you won’t miss them; Stilleben is a place for relaxation, peace, and tranquillity. There is an abundance of ‘entertainment’ right on the doorstep with endless nature trails to explore, where it is not unusual to see moose and deer and perhaps the tracks of bear, wolf and lynx (don’t worry, these animals are naturally timid, and you are extremely unlikely to bump into them!).
The restaurant at Stilleben provides organic meals based on the permaculture (permanent agriculture) philosophy, that is, an ecological, sustainable approach to providing sufficient food for our needs. The result is delicious, healthy, locally sourced home-made food which cares for us, cares for the Earth and is part of a natural process.
All guests at Stilleben are asked to remove their shoes when entering the hotel and either leave them on the shoe rack provided at Reception or in their room. Slippers are available but walking around in socks is the customary Swedish way and adds to the homely atmosphere. And don’t forget your swimming costume - we include a 2-hour lake-side hot-tub and sauna experience for all our customers...why wouldn’t we?!

This holiday is rather special and we know you will have lots of questions about it. Here are a few that we have anticipated, but let us know if you have any others and we'll add them to the list.
Who is this holiday suitable for?
This holiday is aimed at couples or a family with older children who appreciate nature and being outdoors. This is essentially a very relaxing holiday which can be as active or inactive as you like, however we believe it is better to take part in a couple of the optional outdoor activities in order to fully appreciate your surroundings.
Is this holiday suitable for young children?
The answer to this is no, not really, not in our opinion. Young children tend to need 'entertaining' and the whole point of this holiday is that each person can do as much or as little as they wish, maximising the opportunity to relax and unwind. Young children would also need an extremely watchful eye on the island as there are no safety barriers around the island and children would have direct access to the water - often with a drop from an edge. We do have an alternative suggestion in Sweden for families with children, with a similar appeal, so just ask us for more details.
This holiday sounds as though it is very 'green' and 'environmental'. Does this mean that the quality of accommodation and food is not as good?
Absolutely not! We love Stilleben because they have a very strong environmental and ethical ethos, and we think this IMPROVES the quality of their accommodation and food! The hotel provides first class accommodation with a level of comfort that you would find in many four star hotels, however they do not include extras such as a TV or mini-bar or 24 hour room service - they are unnecessary and would detract from, rather than add to, the overall experience. Meals are delicious, filling, organic and healthy - what more can you ask for? The owners are passionate about their hotel, and the experience they provide, and this level of care and service are priceless.
KABIN is very simple accommodation, with a great degree of comfort for a product which is so low-impact. However, KABIN will not suit those who are seeking a luxurious island retreat of the type you may find in the Maldives or Seychelles - here the luxury IS its simplicity and complete lack of superficial, unnecessary adornment. Exclusive and unique, but don't expect Paris Hilton to be impressed with your selfies!
Will I be able to use my mobile phone on the island?
Yes, there is reception on the island, and also a small generator which means you can charge mobile phones individually. There isn't any WiFi on the island, though there is free WiFi at Stilleben.
Can I use my own bathroom products i.e. shampoo, shower wash etc?
At Stilleben you will find a selection of quality, natural, environmental, cruelty-free products available to use in the bathroom. You may have your own, which you prefer, and you are free to use them in the hotel but we really do recommend you try theirs out - they're wonderful! As the island is a completely green, low-impact product you really need to use the products provided unless you have your own, of the same calibre.
Can special diets be catered for?
Within reason, yes. Vegetarian and vegan diets are not a problem, nor are gluten-free or diabetic diets. However the owners are unable to accommodate food allergies such as nuts.
You say the island is only accessible by boat - are we transferred or do we have to do this ourselves?
You will drive yourself to the small, secluded harbour and departure point for the island. Here you will leave your hire car and the bulkiest items of your luggage, that is, you will take a smaller bag with essential items for a 2-night stay. You will then be taken by small motor-boat to the island and given a full tour, along with instructions on how everything works and lots of practical information.
