Winter activities at Camp Ripan

Escape for a short winter break in Swedish Lapland for fun in the snow and the chance to see the Northern Lights.

Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost town and is situated in the province of Lapland. The area where the town currently stands shares a history with the indigenous Sámi people which goes back at least 6000 years. Generations of Sámi families still herd their reindeer in these parts and, although maintaining their traditions and culture, now have more modern equipment to help them. Snowmobiles are not just for tourists but are also a very valuable means of transportation for the Sámi to follow their reindeer across the Arctic landscape.

Camp Ripan is a lovely lodge with a collection of adjacent chalet rooms. The lodge sits on the edge of Kiruna with the town on one side and the Swedish Arctic wilderness on the other. The small resort offers a large number of snow-based activities including dog-sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice-fishing. There are also a variety of exciting activities aimed at maximising your chance of seeing the Northern Lights. There really is so much to choose from!

Restaurant Ripan is renowned in Swedish Lapland and provides seasonal (there are eight of them in the Sámi culture!), locally sourced food. The chefs follow traditional recipes spiced with new twists and influences from around the world. Dine a la carte or choose one of our featured dining options to add to your holiday experience.

We have deliberately kept the included content of this holiday simple. This gives you the freedom to pick and choose from the wide variety of activities and experiences available based on inclination, taste and budget. This holiday is also excellent for those with only a short amount of time available, providing the opportunity to pack lots of experiences into a weekend or short, mid-week winter break in Swedish Lapland.

Camp Ripan (4*) – Kiruna

Camp Ripan Hotel in Swedish Lapland

This accommodation is nothing to do with camping! Camp Ripan is situated with the city of Kiruna on one side and the unspoilt Swedish wilderness on the other and comprises of a main ‘lodge’ building which houses the reception desk, lounge area, restaurant and Northern Lights bar/lounge and a number of adjacent chalet rooms which are stylishly decorated and extremely comfortable – especially after a day out in the chilly Arctic climate.

On entering the main building you first see a very large and welcoming stove fire with a number of comfortable sofas on which to relax. A flight of stairs on your left takes you up to another lounge area with huge picture windows looking at the open sky – perfect for spotting the Northern Lights. Back downstairs in the entrance area there is also a shop which sells a selection of outdoor clothing and accessories and is also where you can hire snowshoes and skis if you would like to explore independently. Next to the reception desk you will find a fully stocked bar that leads in to their large, stylish restaurant which has something of a reputation for the high standard of its cuisine. It is here that all meals are served, including their substantial buffet breakfast.

The chalet rooms come in three styles and sizes all with en suite shower and WC; Giron (large with two bedrooms areas, the main bedroom having twin beds which can be together or separate and a separate bedroom with bunk beds, mini-kitchenette, dining table), Kiruna (sleeps 2 in a king-size bed and has a sofa bed in the same room for children, No kitchenette) and Rievssat (simple twin bedded rooms with separated beds). All rooms have private shower and WC, cable TV, telephone and free WiFi. Cross-country skis, snowshoes, kick-sleds and warm clothing/boots can all be hired, and toboggans are available free of charge.

But it is Ripan Spa that will catch the eye of many guests! The spa has several types of saunas and steam rooms, plus massage showers, freezing-cold ‘wake up’ showers, foot soaks and an indoor spa bath and outdoor hot tub. Guest can choose to purchase a Sauna Bucket (please note, this is included with some of our holidays) which is stocked with a full range of organic products based on natural, local ingredients with an instruction booklet of how and when to use them as you move through the spa’s various sections. Suzel and Margaret particularly enjoyed testing the spa’s facilities for our guests! The spa is located in a separate building and guests are given a towel and bathrobe when they enter the spa from the reception desk. Healthy light snacks and drinks are also available to purchase whilst lounging in the spa’s relax area.

Description:  Travel in a snowmobile–drawn sled from Jukkasjärvi out to the reindeer camp in the forest. We keep and fodder part of our reindeer herd during winter to help them survive hard grazing conditions due to climate change. There are adult reindeer, youngsters and from around mid-December also calves that will eat out of your hand. The reindeer is one of the Sámi society’s most important culture bearers and resources. We will enter the reindeer enclosures and feed them. Our reindeer will curiously come, sniff at you and most likely venture eating out of your hand. You will hear a lot about how today’s reindeer husbandry works, what the challenges are, and what it means to adopt a traditional profession that is dear to one’s heart. The reindeer herder will show you the art of lassoing before it is your turn to throw the lasso. When some of the reindeer stags are caught you will assist leading them to the sled track where the reindeer will be harnessed. We still tame and train some of our reindeer to conserve the cultural Sámi heritage of reindeer sledding. And we are proud to offer you the chance of driving reindeer with a sled around a short circuit if you like. After the reindeer sledding part you will be invited into a lávvu, i.e. Sámi tent, where you will sit on reindeer skins around a sparkling warming fire whilst learning more about the indigenous people of Fennoscandia, i.e. the Sámi people’s culture, history and our way of life. You will be served suovas, the Sámi signature dish, which is lightly-salted and cold-smoked sliced reindeer meat, fried over the open flames and served on gáhkku-bread with a dash of lingonberry jam. It is eaten like a wrap and tastes best with hot, steeped coffee sipped from a guksi, a drinking cup carved from birch burl. On the way back to Jukkasjärvi we make a halt at our handicraft shop at Márkanbáiki where you can have a look at a range of traditional and modern local Sámi arts and crafts.

Absolutely, as long as you let us know in advance so that we can ensure our suppliers provide you with delicious alternatives.

Camp Ripan is located approximately 15-20 minutes drive from Kiruna Airport and a return transfer is included in your holiday price.

If you are joining a dog-sledding or snowmobiling activity then you will be provided with special thermal overalls to wear during your activity. However, for the remainder of your stay you will need your own warm, winter clothing. Our recommended clothing list will be provided along with your travel documents.

If you would prefer to rent outer clothing locally i.e. overalls, boots, gloves, hat, then please let us know and we will provide a quotation for you and arrange to have the clothing ready for you on arrival at Camp Ripan.
