North Iceland winter holiday

Lake Mývatn is a part of North Iceland’s magnificent Diamond Circle route and is a unique natural phenomenon, teeming with geological wonders, which sits on the northern fringe of Iceland’s central highlands.

Lake Mývatn was created around 2300 years ago as a result of a large, fissure eruption which spewed out basaltic lava which flowed down the valley and into the Arctic Ocean, almost 50 kms away. Mývatn’s dramatic surrounding landscape is testament to this, with numerous volcanic land forms including lava pillars and pseudo craters. This weird and wonderful region is an excellent location from which to view the ethereal Northern Lights.

This holiday is perfect for those who wish to combine a stay in a remote countryside location with a short visit to the capital, Reykjavik. Away from the city’s bright lights there is an excellent opportunity for spotting the Northern Lights whilst at the same time appreciating the weird and wonderful nature that is so special and unique in North Iceland.

This holiday is especially aimed at people who want to see some of the spectacular, countryside geology of Iceland during a short break. It is also perfect for those who do not necessarily want to spend too much time in the hustle and bustle of Reykjavik. The Northern Lights are obviously a key focus of this holiday, so we do are best to ensure we maximise any available opportunity to spot them, however we believe that the content of this holiday is so wonderful that even if the lights remain elusive, you will still feel you have witnessed something special.

In Reykjavik there are numerous cafes and restaurants to choose from - you will be spoiled for choice! At Mývatn, Sel Hotel have an a la carte restaurant with a variety of dishes available. They do not offer a half-board option otherwise we would have included it, however we are sure you will be happy with the menu they provide.

Yes, absolutely, however it is very important that you let us have details of your special diet at the time of booking. All our suppliers want to ensure they can offer a quality, delicious alternative for you, and they need advance notice in order to do this.
