We know that after an exciting day of exploring the 'lunar landscape' of South Iceland, one of the things you want nothing more to do is relax, that's why we're putting you in one of the country's most luxurious hotels, the newly built Hótel Grímsborgir, beautifully situated near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park. One of the best ways to enjoy yourself is in one of the hotel's outdoor hot tubs, preferably at night, and preferably whilst Miss Aurora Borealis is paying a visit.... although we cannot guarantee she'll show up, the chances of seeing her are very high.
This driving holiday focuses on bringing together many of Iceland's key places as well as some of the more hidden gems that having a car enables you to see more easily. From one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls to erupting geysers, you'll be in a constant state of wanderlust during this 4-night luxury holiday. Get the keys to your car and let the adventure begin...
Arrive Keflavík Airport and collect your Avis hire car (VW Golf, automatic or similar) for 3 days hire. Your journey begins by driving via Reykjavík with ocean views to your left and mountains to your right. You then have the lovely drive through lava fields before taking the mountain road via the geothermal town of Hveragerði and Selfoss to your hotel (approx. 70 miles).

Luxury Short Break Winter Holiday in Iceland
To see the best of South Iceland using your hire car, follow our suggestions on things to see and do.
The Golden Circle
Perhaps South Iceland's most famous excursion but with a hire car being able to take it at your own pace. Highlights include Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir National Park.
Svartifoss Waterfall (‘Black Falls’) and Svinafellsjökull
Svartifoss plunges over a wall of symmetrical columnar balsalt and an easy walk to its base provides a spectacular photo opportunity. Walk to the edge of Svinafellsjökull, a glacial tongue of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier.
Dyrhólaey (‘Doorway Hill Island’)
Iceland’s most southerly tip. A 120 metres high promontory where unique arch-shaped rock is found. The cliffs and sand dunes have been declared a nature reserve protecting large seabird colonies. Spectacular views of the black sand beaches from the lighthouse!
Just 20 miles away from Vik you will discover one of Iceland’s most beautiful and photographed waterfalls. Skógafoss is also one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 metres and a drop of 60 metres. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow often appears by its side!
Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon
This iceberg filled lagoon may be furthest away but we urge you to take the stunning drive from Vik. The term ‘out of this world’ could not be more accurate for this place!
Who is this holiday suitable for?
This holiday is perfect for those who are looking for something rather special and that little bit more luxurious. The featured accommodation for this holiday is of a very high standard and, dare we say, rather romantic...so for this reason it is really aimed at couples seeking a cosy, get-away experience where they primarily want to enjoy one another's company - and the wonders of Iceland of course! This holiday includes a 4x4 hire car while at Grimsborgir, in order to give lots of freedom to sightsee independently so it is also aimed at those who are happy to drive themselves (although we can arrange private transfers and excursions for this holiday on request).
Is it easy to drive in Iceland?
Due to the nature in Iceland you will find a mixture of tarmac (main roads) and gravel roads, though most of the roads are gravel roads with a loose top surface. This means that speed limits are rather low, which is great, because it gives you time to negotiate the road without feeling rushed or flustered. Off roading is forbidden in Iceland as it damages the nature, therefore you will only be negotiating primary roads.
All hire cars are fitted with winter tyres which mean you can drive over snow safely and easily. We provide detailed driving directions as part of our service, however we can arrange a SatNav system in hire cars for those who wish (supplement applies).
As long as you follow the speed limit and drive carefully you will be absolutely fine.
Can special diets be catered for?
Absolutely! Just let us know at the time of booking in order that we may organise delicious alternatives, whether gluten free, vegetarian, vegan or just plain fussy!
