A truly special journey to the arctic regions of Norway to experience the magical Midnight Sun, the remote and majestic landscape of Lofoten and Vesterålen and the amazing nature and wildlife that this wonderful region has to offer.

Your journey begins in the small Arctic port of Bodø, famous for its Sea Eagles and exceptional street art. Bodø also serves as the gateway to your onward journey through the stunning Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands. These remote islands showcase outstanding natural beauty – with dramatic rocky peaks, deep fjords and stunning white beaches. The rich feeding ground in this area makes for the perfect environment for several species of whale and your included Whale Watching excursion offers a 95% chance of seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. You end your stay in Norway in the fabulous little town of Tromsø. Here the sun never sets for a whole month and we have included an evening RIB Safari for you to enjoy the Midnight Sun in all its glory!

The summer season may be short in these arctic shores, but the days are long and there is an abundance of opportunity to be ceased during this time!

Day 1 | Arrive Bodø

Arrive Bodø Airport by airport from the U.K. Taxi transfer to your hotel in the centre of Bodø (not incuded, approx 2 km).

1 night BODØ - Thon Hotel Nordlys (3* plus)
Meals included today:  None

Bodø is noted for its white-tailed sea eagles and exceptional street art. If time permits, we recommend a visit to the Aviation Museum, Jekt Trade Museum or the quirky Bodøgaard Art & Culture gallery.

Day 2 | Lofoten Islands

Take a taxi to the airport (not included). A short domestic flight (approx. 25 mins.) takes you across to Svolvær, the ‘capital’ of the Lofoten Islands.

Collect your Europcar hire car (VW Golf Manual or similar) from the office at the airport and drive to your hotel in the centre. Includes CDW, TP and Tax – excess is NOK 9500 however, upgraded insurances can be purchased locally to reduce this if required.

3 nights SVOLVÆR – Thon Hotel Lofoten (4*)

Meals included today:  Breakfast

Day 3 & 4 | Explore the Lofoten Islands

Use your hire car you to explore the islands at your leisure. Visit the picturesque fishing villages dotted throughout including the nearby village of Henningsvær which has a lovely harbour and is a popular location for artisans to settle - we recommend a visit to Gallery Lofotens Hus and Engelskmannsbrygga to view the work of local painters, potters, glass blowers and wildlife photographers. The fish soup at Fiskekrogen is renowned and very, very filling! A variety of more active opportunities are also available - how about a RIB boat safari to the famous Trollfjord for an opportunity to spot Sea Eagles, or guided sea kayaking?

Meals included both days:  Breakfast

Day 5 | Vesterålen Islands

Drive northwards along the Lofoten Islands and across to the Vesterålen Islands - approx. 3 hours.

3 nights ANDENES – Thon Hotel Andrikken (3* plus)

Meals included today:  Breakfast

Day 6 | Whale Safari

0845 Check-in at the Whale Safari Museum in Andenes. Your guided tour of the museum begins at 0930 and lasts 45-60 minutes. The boat (‘M/S Reine’ or ‘M/S Maan Dolphin’) departs at 1100 and you will be out for between 3 and 4 hours. On the trip to the whale grounds you can enjoy the arctic scenery and views with the beautiful islands of Andøya, Senja and Bleiksøya in the backgound. The island of Bleiksøya is a bird island where there is a large puffin colony. You will be able to see many of these seabirds on your trip out to the whales. The most common bird species that you can observe are fulmars, different types of gulls, shags and more.

The type of whales most seen are the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). This species is a dive master specialised on the deep sea. In the area outside Andenes the average dive time is around 30 minutes, after which the whale re-surfaces, breathes and gets ready for another dive. We approach the whale cautiously when it is on the surface and get ready to watch the whale diving and disappearing into the depths again. Quite often there are several whales in the area, and you can watch another whale instead of waiting for the same one to come up again.

If you are lucky, you can also observe other species such as killer whales, fin whales, pilot whales, white-sided dolphins and humpback whales.

N.B. Whilst it is never possible to guarantee which species of whale you will observe or that you will definitely see whales (remember this is nature), sightings in this area are very good. If you do not see whales during your trip you will be offered another trip free of charge or receive a full refund. Trips can be changed or cancelled at short notice due to bad weather or too few people.

Meals included today:  Breakfast

Day 7 | Free day

Free day to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Meals included today:  Breakfast

Day 8 | Tromsø and Midnight Sun RIB Safari

Depart Andenes by ferry across to Gryllefjord on the island of Senja (departs 0845, duration approx. 1 hour 40 mins.). Continue north (approx. 80 km) and take the ferry from Botnhamn to Brensholmen (departs 1400 Mon-Fri or 1600 Sat-Sun, duration 45 mins.). From Brensholmen you drive through Kvaløya and across the mainland to Tromsø (approx 55 km).

Return your hire car to the Europcar office in Downtown Tromsø. Short walk to your hotel.

Set out by RIB boat into the open sea where you will see the idyllic little island, Gåsvær, with its little church and undisturbed view to the north to see the sun that never sets - the ‘Midnight Sun’.

Harbour seals are often seen popping their heads up from the water and if you are fortunate, you may also see the small harbour porpoises. Shags, the White-Tailed Eagle and the Golden eagle are common in this area as are Puffins, Guillemots, Theists, and European Storm Petrels. If the weather and the tide permit, on your return from Gåsvær you will stop at a lovely place called Risvika. Risvika is the homeplace of the Risvik family who for generations have lived here on their small farm where fishing forms big part of their life.

N.B. This trip is on occasion operated by two different companies working closely with each other and your destination may vary from that described above. Either way you will always be provided with a fabulous experience and amazing scenery and all under the eternal glow of the Midnight Sun!
Departs: 2000. Duration: 3 hours.
