What comes to mind when you think of Iceland? We asked a group of people that question and the majority stated 'glaciers, geysers and waterfalls'. Some people also tried pronouncing 'Eyjafjallajökull' but successfully failed!
We at Scandinavia Only believe Iceland is one of the greatest places on earth, and with this holiday we wanted to show you exactly why. Yes, it has glaciers, geysers and waterfalls, but they are not the only thing. They are just the tip of the iceberg. Iceland is a country that makes you feel something, that indescribable feeling of being in awe of the universe.
This driving holiday focuses on tying together many of Iceland's key places as well as some of the more hidden gems that having a car enables you to see more easily. From powerful waterfalls to black beaches, and from glacial lagoons to erupting geysers, you'll be in a constant state of wanderlust.
Driving through Iceland is like no other place on earth, you can drive back and fourth on the same road (although we would never suggest doing that!) and you would see something new. The weather constantly changes; one minute it's glorious sunshine, but in the blink of an eye the sky is dark and brooding, and then a rainbow suddenly appears. Being in your car and witnessing these changes is not just exciting but incredibly surreal.
After picking up your hire car from the airport you drive to Hotel Ranga, one of Iceland's most famous hotels. Its ideal location is within close proximity to many attractions including some of Iceland's most famous waterfalls: Háifoss and Skógafoss. Other lesser known but worth-while gems of Iceland are nearby including Hjálparfoss and Gjáin.
2 nights HELLA - Hotel Rangá
From Hotel Ranga we suggest a visit to the nearby Westman islands, a group of islands, skerrries and rock pillars. The islands were formed by submarine volcanic euruptions along a 30-km long fissure lying southwest to northeast. The largest and only inhabited island is Heimnaey. You will discover a landscape teaming with birds and vegetations, as well as a beautiful perspective of mainland south Iceland.
After a buffet breakfast take the drive to Vik. Staying in Vik means you are staying in Iceland's most southern town and a perfect base to see many of Iceland's most famed attractions. Despite its small size it's still one of largest towns in south Iceland and arguably the prettiest, nestled at the bottom of rolling mountains and overlooking the ocean. Perhaps Vik's most distinct feature are the 'fingers' of basalts rocks also known as Reynisdrangar Pillars that eerily jut out of the sea and can be seen from most places, including your hotel.
