Day 4 - Volcano Hike Across Fimmvörðuháls
Guided day tour to Thorsmork valley and hike in the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull & Fimmvörðuháls volcanoes, reaching the 2010 eruption site at the top of Fimmvörðuháls volcano. Thorsmork is a nature reserve at the foot of the majestic Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Mýrdalsjökull glacier, and a truly unique valley with its rugged nature. For thousands of years glaciers and glacial rivers have carved out this spectacular valley, creating a very dramatic landscape of sandstone sculptures, deep canyons and sharp ridges. It is a spectacular sight never forgotten. To reach this secluded highland valley and to drive across unabridged glacial rivers we need a modified 4x4 vehicle and an experienced guide. The tour begins with a drive along the beautiful south coast to Seljalandsfoss and passes the Gígjökull glacier where we see first-hand the results of the destructive power of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. There in 2010 a massive flood of melt water and small ice burghs from the volcanic crater ripped the glacier to shreds and flooded the area completely.
Continuing onwards our destination is the Básar cabin where we take off on our 6-8 hour hike up and down the Fimmvörðuháls volcanoes. The ascend is between 700-800 meters. This spectacular trail of approximately 16 km, through Iceland´s varied landscape, encompassing views on glaciers, snow-capped mountains, new brand craters and lava, volcanoes and the most surreal beauty of Thorsmork. This challenging hike offers an unforgettable trekking experience and the feeling of solitude and natural beauty.

Most of the tour will be on roads/paths less travelled.
