This holiday combines the arctic regions of two countries – Sweden and Norway. Both provide completely different experiences in terms of terrain, scenery and accommodation.
This exciting holiday starts in Swedish Lapland where you’ll spend a unique night in the ICEHOTEL followed by a comfortable and cosy sleep in warm accommodation. The ICEHOTEL is the world’s first ice hotel, and has expanded over the years to include an ice bar, church and an array of elaborate sculptures every year when the hotel is built from scratch.
You will then embark upon the Ofoten railway, crossing the Norwegian border to Narvik before continuing northwards on the beautiful Arctic Route bus to Tromsø, the great Arctic capital. Tromsø is one of the world’s most famous places for spotting the Northern Lights and the city has a bustling centre with an impressive collection of quality restaurants, bars and cafes.
Day 1 | Journey to the ICEHOTEL
Fly from the UK to Kiruna via Stockholm. Transfer to ICEHOTEL Resort and check-in at Reception where you will receive your thermal clothing for the duration of your stay. Sea Birds, Culture and Scenery Tour by RIB Boat from Tromsø
Description: We pick you up in Tromsø by bus and drive to the local community Kvaløyvågen. During the drive you can sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery while our expert guide informs you about the adventure that awaits and what to look for once you are on the boat.
This is a great opportunity to see the village which has survived on fishing and farming for several generations, and also to hear about the coastal culture. The small community with 270 inhabitants has a local fish factory that is 100 years old, and the fish racks and the small fishing boats will give you an insight into how people have lived their lives here. Midway through our tour we will go ashore on the small island; Gåsvær, a small island with a white traditional church that was founded and built by the local community. We have been allowed access inside, and you will be able to see for yourself what a traditional church of these parts looks like. We will also enjoy a warm cup of coffee/tea on the church steps while telling you about the culture and history of the island and surrounding area.
This tour is recommended for nature photographers, bird watchers and people that love to see the rural coastal landscape and we want you to keep your eyes open for all the wildlife that can be found in the area; such as white-tailed eagles, king eider, shags, guillemots and little auks. We also have a big population of seals in our area and from time to time we see them pop their heads out from the water to look at us.
You will be provided with an extra layer of clothing and survival suits before the tour. Small group activity – maximum 12 people per RIB boat, total of 30 people per tour. Not suitable for children under 12 years of age
Operates: 1 November – 31 March, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Duration: Approximately 5 hours including transfers
Price: £120 per person
Price includes: Transfers, guided bus tour and RIB boat safari, thermal outer clothing, coffee/tea and biscuits
Good to know: Read our simple guide to prepare for your RIB Boat Safari
During your stay at the ICEHOTEL warm boots, a snowsuit, mittens and balaclava are included for the duration of your stay.
However, as a rule of thumb for any Arctic winter holiday, we would strongly recommend the layering principal (base, mid, outer) with man-made thermal fibres or wool. In our opinion wool is definitely best, and merino wool is soft and cosy and certainly a good investment. A good, waterproof outdoor jacket is essential, and also over trousers are a bonus if you have them. Wool socks (we wouldn't wear anything else here), perhaps a couple of pairs, and good hiking boots or snow boots are very important. Gloves, scarf, hat and you're raring to go!
If you're doing optional excursions like dog-sledding, snowshoeing, and Aurora hunting activities you will be provided with thermal overalls to ensure you are warm and cosy during extended periods outdoors.
For your night in ICEHOTEL, we recommend you wear thermal underwear, warm socks and a hat, and perhaps bring an extra fleece jacket or similar. The key is to think layers that allow good ventilation of body heat, materials that breathe and avoiding perspiration. Opt for oil-based creams and skip the morning shower when you have a day planned outdoors.
To ensure the experience meets your expectations, there are a few things that are useful to know in advance:
Between 10 am and 6 pm, Icehotel is open to the public. Day visitors and guests have access to see all the rooms (except Deluxe Suites) and join a guided tour. This means overnight guests get their rooms at 6 pm and wake-up call is around 7:30 am when staying cold. (Check-in and out for warm rooms is at 3 pm and 11 am).
All rooms except the Art and Deluxe Suites in Icehotel 365 have curtain doors.
The beds in the cold rooms have a bedframe made of ice, slatted bed base with mattress, reindeer skins and pillows.
There are no bathrooms (except the Deluxe Suites) or storage in the cold rooms. These facilities are housed in a heated service building, the Riverside Lobby, where you also keep your belongings during the cold night. The service desk is staffed 24 hours.
You get a locker or cubicle (if staying in a suite), where you can get changed and keep your belongings.
The changing rooms, sauna and showers are communal for women and men respectively.
There are no electric sockets to charge your phone inside the cold room, so be sure to charge your phone before going to bed.
If you’re changing between cold and warm accommodation, there are about 6-7 hours when you don’t have a room to withdraw to. We strongly recommend you to plan one or two excursions during this time as exploring nature and local culture is a substantial part of getting the full experience. Our lounge and shop are open from 10 am.
Ice is an organic material. We may carry out maintenance and repairs during open hours.
Icehotel is built in sections, which means that there is still building work going on for some time after we’re open for guests.
The temperature inside the hotel hovers at a constant of -5 to -7 C. We provide you with expedition-style sleeping bags which are tested for extreme temperatures, so you’ll be fine with just thermals, hat, warm socks and a mid-layer jumper. You are given access to your room at 6 pm, but the heated service building, the Riverside Lobby, is staffed and open 24 hours, this is where you store your belongings, collect your sleeping bag and use the bathroom, shower and sauna.
When staying in an ice room or in one of the art suites you store your belongings in a locker or booth in the warm Riverside Lobby which is staffed 24 hours, located just metres from the hotel. The Deluxe suite 365 has a private sauna, shower and toilet directly connected to the bedroom. The heated relaxation area also provides storage for your belongings.
Basically it is a year round Icehotel! It is a structure with a green turf roof, covered with Arctic mountain flowers and grass before the snow arrives and then covered with snow when the snow falls. The turf roof covers metal sheets, protecting the building insulation which is designed to keep cold air in. The arched inner ceiling has built-in chilling tubes holding a temperature of -5 C. The inner walls are then covered in snow. The whole structure is held up by pillars, but the walls of the rooms are made from snow. As with the original Icehotel a key element is its adornment inside with decorative objects, pillars and sculptures. 25 commissioned artists and architects are responsible for the decoration and design of the suites, bar and gallery. Icehotel 365 means you are now able to enjoy an Icehotel experience all year round.
Absolutely! You just need to let us know at the time of booking in order that we may insure our suppliers provide you with suitable tasty alternatives. We and they, cannot be held responsible for the provision of inappropriate meals if we were not informed they were required.
In our honest opinion we would have to say no for very young children. The minimum age we would recommend would be 10 years old. Not everyone sleeps like a log in the cold rooms and if you have young children, who have had little sleep...well you know where we're going with this one! Very young children do not have the same ability to keep warm as older children and adults, so we recommend you bring them back when they've reached the magical double figures.
